About the Speaker

Zelalem Kibret is the founder of Zone9, a collective which blogs and campaigns on Human Rights, Constitutionalism and Democracy. He was detained in 2014, after being accused of various anti-government plots. Along with his team, he won the 2015 Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) International Press Freedom award and the 2015 Reporter Sans Frontieres (RSF) Citizen-Journalist award.

Zelalem is also a visiting scholar with CHRGI. His research focuses on transitional politics and justice, post-conflict Africa, traditional justice, the role of individuals in International law and accountability vis-à-vis peacebuilding. He was a Professor of law at Ambo University in Ethiopia and he specialized on teaching Public International Law. During his tenure, he was teaching International Criminal Law, Jurisprudence, International Humanitarian Law and International Environmental Law.
