Guiding Yale’s visual identity
The Office of the University Printer’s team of graphic designers and editors defines, oversees, and builds Yale’s visual brand and supports communication of key content to its most important audiences.
We accomplish this through collaborative, hands-on design work, offering consultation and educational support to staff, and writing and publishing branding and design standards and guidelines.
For more than a century, Yale has employed graphic arts professionals to shape and support its communications efforts. In 1920, Carl Purington Rollins was appointed Printer to the University, making Yale the first institution of higher education in the United States to establish such a role. In recent decades, we have commissioned the Yale typeface, codified Yale Blue, and implemented a comprehensive exterior sign system.
Partnership and consultation opportunities
- Provides guidance and education on Yale’s visual identity, typography, graphic design, and project management
- Offers graphic design and editorial services for academic and administrative offices across Yale
- Provides advice regarding the planning, cost, and execution of visual projects, including the selection of graphic designers or editors
- Manages design, production, and installation of all university exterior and commemorative signage and maps; advises on donor recognition and interior building signage
- Oversees publication of seventeen annual course books comprising the Bulletin of Yale University
