  • Chair, Department of Laboratory Medicine
Expertise:

Pediatrics, laboratory medicine, blood, hematology

Description:

I work with patients and in the research and clinical laboratories on better diagnostics and therapeutics for blood diseases. We expect continuing advances in “cellular therapy” – harnessing a patient’s own immune and stem cells, modifying those cells in the laboratory, and using them therapeutically. We also expect laboratory tests to be a major portion of “personalized medicine” – the idea that knowing a patient’s genetic makeup will allow one to predict which drugs and treatments will work in that patient and which are more likely to have adverse effects.
