About Daniel Gerlach

Daniel Gerlach is a German Middle East expert, editor in chief of zenith Magazine and director general of the Berlin based think-and-do-tank Candid Foundation. He holds degrees in History and Middle Eastern studies from the universities of Hamburg and Paris IV Sorbonne. Daniel works in the field of analytical journalism and travels frequently to the Arab world and Iran. Currently he focuses mainly on Syria, Iraq and Libya. In 2015 he published a book on the Syrian Regime, its power apparatus, and its complex relationship with different communities in the country. Previously, Daniel worked as a director and documentary filmmaker on Middle East related subjects. Today he frequently appears as guest to European and International TV networks to comment on current affairs in the Middle East. Daniel also advises track 2 and peace building initiatives. He co-founded zenith Magazine as an undergraduate student in 1999. zenith aims for filling the gap between investigative journalism, comprehensive style and academia. The magazine became a training ground for many German journalists and correspondents in the field.
