Raised in Virginia, Jay Carney received his B.A. in Russian and East European Studies at Yale University. He began his career as a reporter with The Miami Herald before reporting for TIME magazine for 20 years. His assignments at TIME included coverage of the collapse of the Soviet Union from its Moscow Bureau and coverage of the White House during the Clinton and W. Bush administrations from its D.C. Bureau. Carney served as the D.C. Bureau’s chief from 2005-2008.

In the Obama administration, Carney served as the communications director to then-Vice President Biden from 2009-2011. From there, Carney was named the nation’s 28th White House Press Secretary in early 2011. He became the longest-serving Press Secretary of the 21st century, leaving the post in 2014. After his government service, Carney returned to the private sector and served as a Senior Vice President at Amazon from 2015-2022. He is now the Global Head of Policy and Communications at Airbnb.
