About Jyoti Thottam

Jyoti Thottam joined The New York Times as an editor in Opinion in March 2018. She commissions and edits opinion pieces on a wide range of subjects, and is responsible for Op-Ed’s about the global economy and business. Prior to joining the Times, she was an editor at Al Jazeera America and spent 13 years at Time magazine. From 2008 to 2012, she was Time’s South Asia Bureau Chief in New Delhi. She covered the Kashmir conflict, the Sri Lankan civil war, the Maoist insurgency and wrote numerous cover stories, including an exclusive interview with Narendra Modi and award-winning stories about water scarcity and the Mumbai terror attacks. She is at work on her first book, forthcoming from Viking, set in India after Partition.
