About Sonia Fritz

Fritz was born in Mexico City and studied Communications at the Universidad Autónoma de México, and holds an MFA from Vermont College at Norwich University. She directed in Mexico About Bands, Lives and Other Tunes that won her the “Ariel” for best documentary in 1985. That year she moved to Puerto Rico where she has combined her film classes at the University of the Sacred Heart with producing and directing her documentaries and feature films. Among her most recent works are the feature documentaries After Maria, the two shores (2018), Mona,Treasure of the Caribbean (2017), and 15 Lighthouses of Puerto Rico (2016). She was the co-director of Chapter 1 and 2 of the PBS series Latin Americans (Peabody Award and Imagen Award 2014). She has directed over twenty-five documentaries on migration, gender, and art and culture. She has focused on Latino communities in New York, Ohio as well as in Arizona.

Fritz has also directed narrative films such as America based on the novel America’s Dream by Esmeralda Santiago (Best Actress at the Rabat Film Festival in Morocco, Best Jury Award at the Houston Film Festival, Best Director at Rincon International Film Festival, and Jury Prize at FEMI in Guadeloupe; selected by Montreal FF, Guadalajara, Cinequest, Houston, HBO Latino in NY, Rabat, Ankara, Huelva, and San Diego Latino Film Festival. Her other features are an adventure film for kids, The Stars in the Estuary (60 min.), that toured 100 cities in the US through Kids First Film Festival and15 cities in Latin America through Divercine. She also directed The Kiss You Gave, and An Everyday Story, Fritz was named “Outstanding Latina” by the Latino Leaders magazine.
