About the Speaker

Stephanie Epner is a former Obama Administration national security appointee with extensive private- and public-sector experience. She is currently based at the UN Foundation, where she oversees an initiative focused on the intersection of climate change and foreign policy. Previously, Stephanie spent six years as an appointee at the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Since leaving government in 2017, Stephanie has also served as a fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, advising former Secretary of State John Kerry, Carnegie’s Visiting Distinguished Statesman, on a range of projects.

At the State Department, Stephanie spent four years on Secretary Kerry’s Policy Planning staff, where she was a speechwriter and advisor to the Secretary. Stephanie was responsible for drafting
speeches and other strategic communications materials on the full range of US foreign policy challenges, and she accompanied Secretary Kerry on official travel to more than 50 countries. In
addition, Stephanie managed the Secretary’s public engagement on climate change and other environmental issues.

Before joining Secretary Kerry’s team in 2013, Stephanie served at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, where she led the speechwriting efforts for then-Administrator Lisa P. Jackson and
Deputy Administrator Bob Perciasepe.

Prior to her appointment at EPA, Stephanie was a communications strategist at Edelman Public Relations Worldwide. She also spent time working in strategic government relations, advising domestic and international clients on comprehensive political strategy.

Stephanie is an adjunct professor at The George Washington University and a Security Fellow with the Truman National Security Project. She holds a Master’s degree in international relations from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School and a Bachelor’s degree in communication studies and political science from Vanderbilt University.
