In this panel discussion Poynter Fellows Gabrielle Bellot and Eunsong Kim will discuss emerging ethical considerations and journalistic protocols that are required to respond to shifting media practices. Questions for discussion include: What is ‘public’ and ‘private,’ on social media? Who counts as a ‘source’? What responsibility do journalists bear in protecting social media sources? What happens when a journalist publishes social media content out of context? What harm can come when a social media user’s postings ‘trend’? What ways has the field and profession of journalism shifted with an ever- expanding field of popular, accessible, user-generated ‘reporting’?
